Pop-ups are essential for catching waves and surfing efficiently. In this tutorial, we’ll show you the 3 main types of pop-ups.
Classic Pop-Up
- As you paddle into the wave, position yourself so your hands are shoulder-width apart and your body is centered over the board.
- As the wave picks you up, push off the bottom of the wave with your thighs and swing your front foot under your chest.
- As you pop up, swing your back foot onto the tail of the board.
Chicken Wing Pop-Up
- Follow the same steps as the classic pop-up, but keep your arms bent at the elbows and your hands close to your chest as you pop up.
- Swing your back foot into the chicken wing position, with your knee bent and your foot turned inward.
Simultaneous Pop-Up
- As you push up with your arms, try to bring both of your feet underneath your body and onto the board in one motion. This involves bending your knees and drawing both feet toward your chest.
- Aim to land with both feet in the correct stance, typically with one foot in front and one foot behind, in a position that provides balance and control.
Once you have mastered these 3 pop-ups, you can experiment with different techniques to find what works best for you. It’s all about finding YOUR flow.
The most important thing is to practice regularly so that you can do the pop-up quickly and efficiently.
